Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Illegal arms importation is one of the most pressing security challenges facing many regions of Nigeria, particularly in the northeastern states. Nguru Local Government Area in Yobe State has experienced significant security challenges, including insurgency, banditry, and armed robberies, often fueled by the availability of illegal weapons. This study aims to explore the impact of illegal arms importation on national security, focusing on Nguru LGA, and the broader implications for Yobe State and Nigeria as a whole.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The influx of illegal arms into Nguru LGA has been linked to rising insecurity in the region, exacerbating violence, conflicts, and criminal activities. However, the specific relationship between illegal arms importation and the worsening security situation in Nguru remains inadequately explored. This research seeks to investigate the impact of these illegal activities on national security.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the relationship between illegal arms importation and the security situation in Nguru LGA.
To evaluate how the availability of illegal arms contributes to criminal activities and insurgency in Nguru.
To examine the measures in place to curb illegal arms importation and their effectiveness.

1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Illegal arms importation does not significantly affect national security in Nguru Local Government Area.
H₁: Illegal arms importation significantly affects national security in Nguru Local Government Area.
1.6 Significance of the Study
The study will provide crucial insights into the implications of illegal arms trade on security, offering policy recommendations to address this growing problem. Understanding its impact will help policymakers, security agencies, and local authorities devise better strategies to combat arms smuggling and improve security in the region.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Nguru LGA in Yobe State and will explore the local impacts of illegal arms importation on national security.
